Beware

Where can we breathe? When can we choose?
Swing axes – exhale – build houses – again.

Riptides hide in haze and crazed days;
Nostrils stained with shards of cheap booze.
Darkness rattles … lungs and throats;
Why did they come? Why did we lose?

Meantime, beware, beware of death’s ruse.

Smooth skies feign, calm breeze a myth;
Ghost ships float on morning mist.
Tongue-less pirates unfurl black flags;
Dropping scarred anchors and watching them drag.
Families are dead from cannon’s roar,
Choked of their breath and chewed to their core.

Meanwhile, beware of the breeze, the breeze that is more.

Why did they come?
Why did we lose – it all – again?

  1. goodness henry…this is kinda like pirates of the carribean…esp that last true stanza…the tongueless pirates….has a bit of a zeppelin vibe to me…over seas with crashing oars…(sung in my best coverdale) smiles.

  2. “Riptides hide in haze and crazed days;
    Nostrils stained with shards of cheap booze.”
    These lines created such strong imagery, I could see a heat haze over the water, and then the haze of alcholol vapor – these lines compliment/reinforce each so well within the context of the whole poem. Great stuff, Henry!

  3. so dark… man, i loved it.

    wow.

  4. This is excellent poetry writing. I love the use of alliteration and the clever placement of consonant. I hear vowels sounds, but not overly done and intelligently placed. Fabulous man, fabulous.

    • Bad storms come in a variety ways..we all feel them within our lives..storms of emotions, storms of love, storms of sorrow..with each wave of the ocean you can be sure someone is feeling something..now, as far as real actual weather related storms they will always happen as we cannot control the forces of mother nature..I guess we all need to man the helm the best we can..you asked my thoughts so here they are.. so, tell me what you think?

    • Henry,
      That is quite the internal struggle. The struggle of one’s soul. I know that journey as I travel different realms trying to find pieces of me that I have left in other areas or that I have given to other people. Tis a tough road..my advice just keep getting up and find the pieces of yourself and put them together and then you will have a beautiful picture and that picture will be you..
