Worldly Eyes

I need to see

me.

I can’t

see

me.

Am I an I,

if I

can’t see

me?

galaxies of black stars reflect

nothing

of myself

to see

of me

gardens of faceless manikins

swallow shallow shades

of invisible orchids

crying opaque tears

empty clear glass coffee cups

crash

splinter across

cold bare bathroom tiles

fog layered granite rows

reflect the nothingness

of what is left

to be seen

Am I an I

if I can’t see

me?

I need to see

me.

You asked.

Black Shadows Dance

Black shadows

dance

on blank white walls

to music evicted

from concert halls

Black shadows

dance

on rainbows bleached

to singing arrested

from churches preached

Black shadows

dance

to blood drained rhyme

to choirs beheaded

by blank white minds

Black shadows

dance

Black shadows

dance

Black shadows

dance

on canvas

cold

Scarlet Stained White Silk Scarves

scarlet

stained

white silk

scarves

slice below azure waves

tied to rusty anchors

cut loose from cob webbed bobbing cruise ships

littered with sun bleached bones

on reclined plastic chairs

and in drained chlorine scented pool shells

adrift in pale pall draped seas

atop dreams drained of blue skies blood

your face

jeweled with emerald eyes

bronzed skin

and ivory teeth

fade inside streaks of tiring sunbeams

trying to reach depths they will never see

before dissolving in black lochs of absent light

and scattered cemeteries of

scarlet

stained

white silk

scarves

Shoes

We bandaged your wounds

gave you water

held your hand

in your land

your people killing your people

We tried to understand

be a voice for your blood

your loss

your graves

We cried with you

just wouldn’t fight

not our cause

who rules who

Just wanted you to know we care

support freedom

children living to be old

having children

who have more children

who all grow old in peace

So why did you shoot me?

Leave me bleeding on your street?

Kick me?

Steal my shoes?

That was effed up

Angela saved my ass again

she dragged me

nursed me

stole a jeep and drove me

back to my senses

We’re barefoot today in your honor

in fact we are sending you hundreds of shoes

we have sponsors giving us shoes

just for you

if that what it takes

Who knew all the killing was about shoes

I hope whoever is wearing my shoes lives a long life

I want to know they count for something

I am just confused if I should pray for peace

or shoes

Angela pinched me for that line

But I had to say it

I’ll apologize later

I’m sure

In the meantime

God bless

We’re on a break

I wonder if I can get my day job back

Wonder if I can wear a tux again

but that’s another story

we’re out

see you in the news

and hope I get to see my shoes

1999

In days when rays of sun played hide and seek above the rain

and salted graves whispered names of sunken ships below gray waves

I fed dead fish to penguins brave on shores of rock while sisters prayed

and played dark tunes on sunlit nights and thought of ways to pass away

No one could name that boy today

except a cello stained with pain

hidden with cobwebs in an attic of mine

I have not played

since nineteen
